Under the new NAECA regulations\u00a0most water heaters will be larger,\u00a0requiring more space for installation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new update to the rules for increasing minimum energy efficiency standards was enacted in 2010 and goes into effect on April 16, 2015. We want our customers to be confident that Red Cap Plumbing is taking the proper steps to be prepared for the new NAECA regulations so you don\u2019t have to worry about the technology and engineering involved.\u00a0However, those improvements will impact you in a\u00a0number of ways, and you need to be aware of them when\u00a0planning for the replacement of existing water heaters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"water heater, hot water heater, water heater repair, water heater safety\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hotwater.com\/images\/structure\/global\/under-header.png\" width=\"662\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Water Heaters Under 55 Gallons<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The height of a new unit with the same gallon capacity as an existing unit may be two or more inches taller<\/li>\n<li>The diameter of a new unit that has the same gallon capacity as an existing unit may be two or more inches wider<\/li>\n<li>For units under 55 gallons, add a minimum of three or more inches when planning the space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Replacement Options<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For installations where space is not an issue, units of similar gallon capacity but larger in physical size can be installed.<\/li>\n<li>For installations where space is an issue, a similar unit with smaller gallon capacity may be installed or a unit with different technology may be a good option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"water heater, hot water heater, water heater repair, water heater safety\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hotwater.com\/images\/structure\/global\/over-header.png\" width=\"662\" height=\"236\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Water Heaters Over 55 Gallons<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Water heaters that are larger than 55 gallons will undergo the biggest changes. They may require more space or potentially switching models.<\/li>\n<li>All residential electric models over 55 gallons must be of the Hybrid Electric heat pump water heater type design<\/li>\n<li>All residential gas models over 55 gallons must be of the condensing water heater type design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Applications to Watch For<\/strong><br \/>\nIf the water heater you\u2019re replacing is located in a garage or\u00a0full basement, the size changes may not be a problem at all.\u00a0However, you will need to pay particular attention to any\u00a0installations in closets and alcoves as well as in multi-family\u00a0housing locations (apartments and condos) where space is\u00a0limited. Also, installations where access is gained by using a\u00a0narrow doorway may present a challenge.\u00a0Customers should compare replacement expense vs. unit\u00a0performance because certain replacement options that\u00a0weren\u2019t ideal before the NAECA 2015 change may now be\u00a0more attractive based on new unit designs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sell-thru timelines vs. Manufacturing<\/strong><br \/>\nThe NAECA regulation effective date of April 16, 2015,\u00a0applies only to the manufacture of water heaters.\u00a0Manufacturers, distributors and contractors may continue\u00a0to sell products manufactured prior to this date for an\u00a0indefinite period of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The NAECA\u00a0Guidelines<\/strong><br \/>\nThe U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)\u00a0regulates minimum energy efficiency\u00a0requirements for water heaters.\u00a0The first set of regulations\u2014known as the\u00a0National Appliance Energy Conservation Act\u00a0(NAECA)\u2014were created in 1990 and later\u00a0updated in 2004 to the current standards.
