It&#8217;s important that you and the teenage drivers in your home known how to stay safe while behind the wheel this winter.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, hundreds of Minnesotans find themselves stranded on the roadside.\u00a0Winter weather can kill in mere minutes an unprepared person exposed to the elements, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.<\/p>\n<p>The first step to make sure your trip is a safe one is to start with your tires.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Derusha from Tires Plus stopped by KSTP Sunday to talk about the best way to get your tires road ready.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ms-rteElement-H3\"><u>Stay safe while on the road in the winter:<\/u><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Avoid unnecessary travel if conditions are too poor.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Buckle up, and\u00a0make sure child restraints are secured tightly.\u00a0It is recommended to use bulky clothes and blankets on top of the child restraint harness, not beneath, to ensure harness restraints fit properly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Drive at safe speeds according to road conditions, and provide for plenty of travel time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Increase safe stopping distance between vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Use extra precautions when driving around snowplows by keeping at least five car-lengths behind plows.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">If skidding, remain calm, ease foot off the gas, and turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">If vehicle has an anti-lock braking system (ABS), apply a steady firm pressure to the brake pedal. Never pump ABS brakes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Clear snow and ice from vehicle windows, hood, headlights, brake lights and directional signals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Headlights must be turned on when it is snowing or sleeting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Do not use cruise control on snow\/icy\/wet roads.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Equip vehicles with a scraper\/brush, small shovel, jumper cables, tow chain, and a bag of sand or cat litter for tire traction.
