However, what are allergies in the first place? We know that symptoms usually include a rash, sneezing, or trouble breathing but what is really happening inside the body when an allergic reaction occurs? Learn more about allergic reactions below and when you should contact an allergy doctor:<\/p>\n<p><u>Contacting Allergens<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Everyone with allergies is different in terms of how they usually come in contact with an allergen. Some patients can\u2019t eat certain things while others can have a reaction just from breathing. Allergens can enter the body multiple ways including through your skin, eyes, nose, mouth, or stomach.<\/p>\n<p><u>It All Starts In the Immune System<\/u><\/p>\n<p>When an allergic reaction begins, the immune system is the place where the body starts to react to the allergen presented. The immune system is the protector of the body and it perceives the allergen as an invader that will do harm. Usually the invader is harmless but the body perceives the allergen as harmful.<\/p>\n<p><u>Antibodies Fight<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Once detected, the immune system goes to action by overreacting to the allergen and producing antibodies. Antibodies are proteins that tell the cells to stop the allergen from invading the body. The cells then react by producing histamine which makes blood vessels expand. It is at this point that an allergic reaction occurs, and if serious, needs to be immediately addressed by an allergy doctor.<\/p>\n<p>There are many different ways a person can show signs of an allergic reaction but all reactions are the same within the body. The reaction starts in the immune system as your body tries to keep you safe from the allergen. Every body is different in how it will react to an allergen.
