You may need emergency dental care to save a tooth, stop ongoing bleeding or relieve severe pain. Most dentists set aside time in their schedules for emergency procedures. Check whether your dentist has an after-hours emergency hotline. Keep the number handy at all times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reasons for Emergency Dental Care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been hit in the face or mouth, have a loose tooth, have swelling in your mouth or face, or are in severe pain, call a dentist right away. Let them know what happened and how you\u2019re feeling. They may be able to get you in for an appointment quickly.<\/p>\n<p>If you experience tooth pain when biting down, it could be a sign of an abscess caused by a bacterial infection. An abscess is a serious and even life-threatening problem that requires immediate attention. Your dentist may be able to refer you to a root canal specialist, called an endodontist, to drain the abscess. If you\u2019re unable to reach your dentist, head to the nearest emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>Any injury inside your mouth, including puncture wounds, cuts, and tears to your lips, cheeks, and tongue also require emergency dental care. Clean the wounded area with warm water and use gauze to gently apply pressure to the wound. If you are unable to see an oral surgeon right away, seek care at the nearest emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>A chipped tooth or mild, infrequent tooth pain typically is not considered dental emergencies. You can take over-the-counter-pain medications or use a cold compress when symptoms arise until your next scheduled appointment. Your teeth may be sensitive to cold, or it may be painful to breathe through your mouth. Breathe through your nose, avoid cold food and drinks and call your dentist\u2019s office.
