These situations call for emergency dental care. It\u2019s important to get to the dentist as soon as possible for the best chance to save your tooth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Do In A Dental Emergency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In any dental emergency, you should call your dentist\u2019s office right away. Your dentist may be able to schedule an emergency appointment to address your injury quickly. They can also offer specific instructions to care for your injury until you arrive at the office.<\/p>\n<p>When a tooth is knocked out, it\u2019s important to try and reinsert the tooth in its socket to keep it moist until your dentist can see you. Use a clean washcloth to handle the tooth. Grasp the tooth from the crown to avoid touching the root and disturbing tissues essential for reattachment. Rinse the tooth gently in water to get rid of any dirt. Try to place the tooth back in its socket. If you\u2019re unable to reinsert the tooth, place the tooth in a container of milk.<\/p>\n<p>If your tooth is loose, you can try to gently reposition the tooth with your finger into its normal alignment. Bite down to keep the tooth from moving as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve fractured or broken a tooth, rinse out your mouth with warm water. Hold an ice pack or cold compress to your mouth to control swelling, and take ibuprofen for pain. If your tooth is broken, rinse off the lost pieces and bring them with you to the dentist. Your dentist will assess the severity of the break. Some fractures are minor and require little to no additional care. Moderate to severe fractures or breaks may include damage to the inner layers of the tooth or pulp, and likely require emergency dental care to attempt to save the tooth.<\/p>\n<p>Your dentist\u2019s office may not be open when you require emergency dental care. Leave a message at your dentist\u2019s office anyway to communicate the problem as soon as possible. There may be instructions for emergency care on the answering machine. If none of these options work, head to the nearest emergency room.
