Tonsillitis is the swelling of the tonsils and at times includes swelling of the adenoids. The tonsils are collections of tissues located at the back of the throat. There are two and they are located on each side of the throat. Tonsils and adenoids are part of the lymphatic system. They work to keep away infection and a balance of body fluids. The tonsils and adenoids trap germs that enter the body through the mouth and nose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tonsillitis is most common in children two and older and is contracted by most children at some point in their life. Tonsillitis can be caused by both bacteria or a virus. Viral tonsillitis is most common in young children. Children that contract tonsillitis will have some or all of these symptoms: severe sore throat, red and swollen tonsils, fever, difficulty swallowing and white\/yellow coating of the tonsils. If left untreated tonsillitis can so much swelling that it blocks the throat from air and will leave the child unable to swallow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child gets tonsillitis the best course of action is to have them examined by a doctor. Often a pediatrician will refer a child with ongoing tonsil issues to an ENT doctor. An ENT doctor specializes in the ears, nose, and throat. The ENT will likely perform a rapid strep test and\/or a throat culture. If the child keeps getting tonsillitis on a somewhat consistent basis or if the tonsils are too large and cause trouble breathing, a tonsillectomy may be recommended.
