It\u2019s what will make the space feel comfortable\u00a0\u2014 a spot you\u2019ll enjoy coming back to or spending time in.<\/p>\nHere are five ways to make a house or apartment feel like home.<\/p>\n
1. Choose\u00a0a theme or style<\/h3>\n
What do you like? What are you drawn to? Your interests and aesthetic should figure largely in the way you set up a room.<\/p>\n
Find your style by exploring room designs you like, seeing what you enjoy in other peoples\u2019 homes, and by looking at your wardrobe\u00a0and the other ways you express yourself. Even in a temporary space, small touches can allow\u00a0personality to\u00a0come through.<\/p>\n
2. Incorporate gifts<\/h3>\n
An easy way to personalize a\u00a0space? Add items with meaning.<\/p>\n
Natalie Ensor moved from\u00a0Southern California to Nashville a year ago. When she began decorating her rental, she added pieces that were given to her by friends, especially in her guest room.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlmost everything in there was a gift, which is why it belongs there,\u201d Ensor explained. \u201cFriends will probably stay here, so items friends gave me are there.\u201d<\/p>\n
When\u00a0Lindsy Read, another Nashville transplant, made the trek out from Washington state with her family, she chose to bring decor that had meaning. The chosen items included a kitchen table a friend built, and shelving she and her husband made to fit a small spot in their former Tacoma, WA home.<\/p>\n
\u201cI like the things in our house that have a story,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
3. Remember your travels<\/h3>\n
Years ago, Read and her husband lived abroad in France. Small reminders of that year\u00a0are scattered throughout Read\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n
Ensor also makes it a point to add decor from the places she\u2019s been.\u00a0\u201cWe hit up a flea market or thrift store every time we travel to bring something back with us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Kate Gazaway, also a Nashville resident,\u00a0relies on photography to recall her travels.\u00a0\u201cI love printing physical photos, because having that tangible memory is so important to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Printed photos from Instagram line her stairwell, and a small vintage case in her kitchen contains more photos \u2014\u00a0memories she can flip through when she has a moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI used to not put out homemade touches because I was\u00a0so transient,\u201d Gazaway said.\u00a0\u201cBut when you actually place things on the walls, and you have a coffee table to put your books on \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s when you begin establishing roots.\u201d<\/p>\n
4. DIY whenever possible<\/h3>\n
Even if you\u2019re not the handiest, items you\u2019ve made or altered will bring a strong sense of self into a space.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo much of our home, we\u2019ve built or made together,\u201d said homeowner\u00a0Blair McLeod. \u201cI\u2019ve attached memories to the things that are in the home. I can remember what we were watching or what we were wearing at the time. [They\u2019re] sweet moments.\u201d<\/p>\n
She and her husband bought the 1940s East Nashville home and have slowly transformed it from a 2-bed, 1-bath, one-story home to a 3-bed, 2-bath, two-story home with attached artist studio.<\/p>\n
Doing things themselves made the process a little bit slower, but more personalized.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe collect ideas, and then when we have the time and money, we try to make it happen,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
5. Embrace (real) life<\/h3>\n
Your home, like your life, will change.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we bought our first couch, that was a huge investment. Now I realize it doesn\u2019t matter in the long run,\u201d said McLeod. \u201cThe couch could go at any time, and that would be okay.\u00a0A house is to be lived in, and for our family to be protected in.
