Water Leak Detection
When it comes to owning a home it is easy to overlook a small plumbing leak. The old saying, ‘out of sight out of mind’ definitely comes in to play in regards to small water leaks. Unless there is water gushing out on to our floors, we don’t usually realize there is a problem. In fact, a small leak can be very harmful to the home.
Water leaks can cause two different problems within a home: property damage and increased water bills. Florida’s hot and humid weather combined with a small water leak is a recipe for disaster. This combination typically causes mold, mildew, rotten wood damage and causes harm to the flooring, walls and structural damage. Not to mention that a leak will equal hundreds of extra dollars on your water bill over a long period of time.
There are several options for checking your home for a leak if you have access to the water meter. The water meter line should be checked for leakage or points of failure. The shut off valve near the home (if accessible) should be turned off and the meter checked for a reading. Then you can check the home by turning off all appliances that use water and then check the water meter. If the meter is still registering water usage after these steps then you have a leak.
If you don’t have access to the water meter or do not feel comfortable checking for leaks with this method than you can check inside your home for leaks around your appliances that use water (hot water tank, faucets, shower heads, washing machines, etc.).
