Oral Bone Health
Bone health and oral health are linked together in significant ways. Osteoporosis, a condition which is categorized by the loss of bone density, in some sites in your body has been linked to osteoporosis in your jaw bone. As a result of the loss of density in your jaw bone, teeth can become loose or fall out completely. Bisphosphonates are medications used in the treatment of osteoporosis but have been known to cause osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Tooth loss occurs in one-third of people over age 65 who suffer from osteoporosis. Given that the jaw bone is an anchor support for the teeth, a loss of bone density here can have serious affects.
Periodontal Disease is another oral bone health concern. Periodontal Disease is a chronic condition in which the gums and bone surrounding the teeth become infected. Bacteria and the body’s immune system will begin to break this bone down, causing teeth to become loose, fall out completely, or possibly be removed before more damage is done.
How Can Your Dentist Help?
Dentists have a unique advantage in detecting early signs of osteoporosis with dental x-rays. Because the average person sees their dentist more regularly than their regular doctor, dentists can take regular x-rays and observe bone density through these. The dentist can encourage those patients who show signs of loss of bone density to speak with their regular doctor about early interventions.
How Can You Help?
A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D will help support oral bone health. Exercise or regular physical activity can help total body bone health, which will prevent any linked issues. Abstain from tobacco use or drinking too much alcohol and report any loose teeth, detached gums, or ill-fitting dentures to your dentist immediately. The sooner a problem is discovered, the sooner a treatment plan can be put into place to help your oral bone health.
