Plumbing Services | Bathrooms can experience a range of problems that require plumbing services because of their extensive network of pipes and frequent use. The following homeowner maintenance tips will help you troubleshoot and correct common bathroom plumbing issues.
Check the water level inside the toilet tank. If the level is higher than the overflow pipe, adjust the float so that it is approximately 1 inch below the top of the pipe. There may also be a water level marked on the side of the tank. Place a few drops of food coloring in the water tank. Check back in 10 minutes. If the dye appears inside the bowl, you should replace the flapper valve. Do not flush sanitary napkins, diapers or other personal care products down the toilet because they can clog the drain pipe.
Over time, the showerhead and aerator on the faucet can become clogged with the residue of calcium, and other minerals, naturally present in the water. To remove the encrusted sediment, carefully unscrew the aerator and showerhead. Wrap the jaws of your pliers with a towel to prevent damage to the finish. Dip the aerator and showerhead in vinegar. Use a soft toothbrush to scrub the parts if necessary. Once the sediment is removed, reassemble the faucet or showerhead.
Check your faucet and shower for loose handles and leaks. If the handle or knob is loose, use a screwdriver to remove the decorative cap in the center of the knob. Use a flat tip or Phillips screwdriver to tighten the setscrew. Replace the decorative cap.
A dripping faucet wastes water and causes higher utility bills. Leaks can cause significant water damage and should be repaired as quickly as possible. Red Cap Plumbing is available 24 hours a day.
